DATA DESCRIPTION
Daily mean temperatures from up to 8 locations at HBEF have been measured since October, 1955 using mechanical hygrothermographs in weather shelters.
SAMPLING DESIGN
Air temperature is currently measured at 8 locations. Six locations are in rain gage openings 1, 6, 14, 17, 23, and 24. One location is Headquarters. The INT station is below the forest canopy (not in an opening) at the integrated plot area, west of weir 4. At each station, air temperature (and usually relative humidity) are recorded by Belfort hygrothermographs housed in standard Stevenson screens, 5 feet off the ground. Each screen also houses a maximum, a minimum, and a standard thermometer. The hygrothermograph charts are changed weekly, at which time the thermometers are read. Daily maximum and minimum temperatures are read manually from the charts. Correction for disagreement with the thermometers are seldom made as agreement is usually within 2 degrees F. The hygrothermographs are readjusted annually to give the daily mean. The daily maximum and minimum temperatures are entered directly into the computer. Maximum and minimum temperatures are converted from Fahrenheit to Celsius and then averaged to give the daily mean.

VARIABLES
| Column | Variable | Description | Units | Coded | Missing Value |
| 1 | Date | Sample date | yymmdd | n | none |
| 2 | Station 1 | Measured at station 1 | degrees C | n | -99.0 |
| 3 | Station 6 | Measured at station 6 | degrees C | n | -99.0 |
| 4 | Station 14 | Measured at station 14 | degrees C | n | -99.0 |
| 5 | Station 1A | Measured at station 1 | degrees C | n | -99.0 |
| 6 | HQ | Measured at the headquaters building | degrees C | n | -99.0 |
| 7 | Station 23 | Measured at station 23 | degrees C | n | -99.0 |
| 8 | Station 17 | Measured at station 17 | degrees C | n | -99.0 |
| 9 | Station 24 | Measured at station 24 | degrees C | n | -99.0 |
NOTES
Comparisons among stations should be made with caution because data have not been corrected for possible instrument bias. -99.0 is the missing value when the weather station is not operating. Otherwise if a day is missed, the value for that day has been estimated from values at the other stations. Estimated values are not flagged. The Fahrenheit to Celcius conversion and rounding to whole degrees Centigrade leads to considerable underrepresentation of -5, 0, 5, 10, etc. values.
