DATA DESCRIPTION
Wind data have been measured by an anemometer mounted 3 m above the ground at HBEF Headquarters during various time periods since 1965. The anemometer and wind vane system was run at Headquarters from October 27, 1965 through July 22, 1981. Before 1981, every mile of wind movement caused a tick mark on a strip-chart recoder, and wind direction as N, S, E, W, or a combination, was recorded continuously. Since 1981, wind speed and direction have been collected by the automatic data logger system at Headquarters.
SAMPLING DESIGN
From October 26, 1965 through July 22, 1981, an anemometer and wind vane system was run at HBEF Headquarters. Data were recorded on a strip chart recorder, with a mark for each mile of movement, and direction given by the ON position of four pens, for S, W, N, and E. The charts have been read only for the periods October 1965 - August 1967, and April 1971 - June 1973. At 9 inches per day, the total length of record is about 4400 feet. Missing data occurs for various reasons: out of ink, bad sensor switches, power supply problems, etc. Gaps vary from a few hours to many months.
Beginning in 1981, wind speed and direction were included in the automatic data logger system at Headquarters. An additional, totalizing, anemometer is read every working day at 8:00 a.m. For many years these data were noted on the wind speed and direction strip chart, so access requires unrolling those charts. Since 1981 the data are on paper and have not been digitized, except for the purpose of filling missing values.

NOTES
The primary cause of lost data has been lightning damage to the anemometer reed switch. On some dates, the wind speed was measured but the direction was not due to malfuntioning equipment. Ideally, the sum of wind direction values should be equal to the total wind speed. Total wind speed values flagged with the letter "E" are estimated using data from the totalizing anemometer. Over weekends, estimated daily values are the same for 3 consecutive days.
